[MUSIC] The poof bow, or martelĂŠ exercise is another great exercise that's from Mimi Zweig. This exercise teaches the student the fundamentals of the martelĂŠ bow stroke. We set the bow at the tip, bite, release, then move to the frog. Poof! Then we do it in the other direction. We'll begin with the whole bow. Then divide into half, thirds, and quarters. We'll also do six, eight, and 12. Practicing many repetitions is very important. We also want to make sure that the student listens for the ringing of the violin. Or viola in this case, after the bite and release of the stroke. Remember the end of the previous note is the beginning of the new note. We can also think about it as if we are stopping and starting and putting on the brakes. Okay Caroline, let's work on our poof bows. So let's put your hand against the viola. We're going to set the bow at the tip. [SOUND] And we're going to push the bow and string, by punting arm, this part of your arm, that's right. So push the bow in and don't me pull that out, good and let's do a little crunchy sound. Good, okay so we're going to poof the bow quickly, all the way down to the frog. And lead with your engine and I want you to think about it, as if you had a dart in your hand and your holding the dart. And then you throw the dart and it flies free through the air and then, hits its target, okay? >> Okay. >> So back on the string, so remember, not from here, but here. >> Okay. >> All right, so I'll help you the first time. Poof. [MUSIC] Good. Now remember, the weight is back here. And let the bow go, poof! [MUSIC] Good, and let's do it again. [MUSIC] Very good, and poof. [MUSIC] Good. Now let's divide the bow in half. [MUSIC] Good. Try that again. [MUSIC] Go one more time. [MUSIC] Good. Now three equal parts. Ready? [MUSIC] Very good. Do you hear it ringing? >> Yeah. >> That's good. Okay, four. Two plus two. Two in the top half, two in the bottom half. Ready? [MUSIC] Very, very good. Now, we'll do six. Three at the top half, three at the bottom half. [MUSIC] Good. Eight four and four. [MUSIC] Good. And now, 12, six and six. [MUSIC] 10, 11, 12. [MUSIC] Good job. >> Thank you. [MUSIC]
