[MUSIC] We are now going to go through the steps to holding the violin. Repetition is very important in teaching the body to remember how to hold the instrument correctly. And so you will go through these steps many times in each lesson. First, lets make that the violin has a high dot in the middle of the fingerboard where the harmonic falls. This divides the fingerboard in half. Whenever we are not using our fingers to play, we will return the hand to this spot and say, tap your fingers over the high dot. It will set up a good hand frame. Okay, so let's check your high dot. And here's the high dot. And let's set your hand over, good and tap your fingers, [SOUND] very good. Next, let's draw a magic X on the base joint of the index finger where it connects to the hand. This serves as a guide so the student knows where to place the hand on the neck of the violin. We will then slide the magic X up and down the neck of the violin. If they are sliding correctly, the X will disappear like magic. Okay, let's give you a magic X. So this is where the magic X is. Good. Let's tap your fingers over your high dot. [SOUND] Tap Derry Derry dt. >> [SOUND] Derry Derry dt. >> Good. Tap Manolique. >> Manolique. >> Manolique, very good. Slide your hand up and down the neck on the magic X. Is it disappearing? >> A little bit. >> Okay, good. Slide it some more. By tapping, we are releasing any tension that might be in the hand. This is also the impetus for the vibrato motion. This means that from the very first lesson, we are already practicing vibrato. Okay, let's put our feet together. Let's make a letter V and take a step. Can you rock side to side? Good. And let's tap your fingers again, and slide up and down the neck. Good. Take your thumb with you. Good. And tap your fingers again. Nice. Now, let's do our statue of liberty. Good. Can you see your reflection? >> A little bit, yeah. >> Good. And now make sure to guide your student's violin to their shoulder and set the violin on the collarbone. Nice. Let's check and make sure that the button is right centered in the adams apple. Good. And the hand is up against the violin over the high dot. Good can you look up the sky? Can you look down at your toes? Look straight ahead, shake your head no, shake your head yes. Very good. Okay now, let's see if you can hold the violin just with the weight of your head. That's right, put your hand over here. Good. And we make sure that your jaw is sitting comfortably in the chin rest, really a jaw rest. Okay, very nice. Excellent position. Great. [MUSIC]
