[SOUND] We're going to talk about the postharvest losses and
how ADM Institute for Prevention of Postharvest Loss is associated.
What do we do?
This is what we'll talking about.
And you must have already seen along various different problems
associated with postharvest losses in some of the previous lectures out there.
The causes, what causes these postharvest loss problems.
Some of the approaches that people are doing in different parts of the world.
And other actors and other partners that are working,
other individuals are working to bring out some
interventions to prevent full services losses.
So here we will just give you an example of how an organization like
ADM Institute is playing a big role in introducing postharvest loss out there,
and I have to mention it in some of the reasons, and actions for
postharvest loss preventions anyway.
We need a significant amount of investment because it's a big problem.
Postharvest loss is a huge problem worldwide, different type of crops, and
different type of communities in allowed there, so we need to have that
a significant investment is required to reduce postharvest losses.
We need technological advances.
New technology need to come up.
We all know that there is not enough renewable land or
water or things like that of course energy is renewable.
So we, our inputs are very limited to keep producing more and more crop.
And of course the market liberalization,
we need the careful public actions there to help.
Also to help the private sectors to bring them with us to play,
side by side with us to reduce postharvest losses.
So, these are kind of a reason behind why we need to do this kind of work.
So, the potentials for postharvest loss prevention in
developing countries they are significant.
There are a lot of potentials so there are a lot of needs.
One and a few of the things we have used is here is
the knowledge and awareness of the postharvest losses.
People need to know what it is and
what kind of technologies are available for to prevent this kind of thing.
People need to know the Cost-effectiveness of the machine uses for
postharvest losses.
We need better infrastructure, and
some of the common one would be drying and storage.
How do we have those infrastructure and other logistics like roads and
transportation?
You may have those storage and drying facilities, but if the farmers can't move
the crop, I mean, these things are not going to serve any purpose.
We need to have connect people, we need to connect the farmers with the public,
with the private sectors so they can see the whole pictures just like some
some of us do, and like in anyone of the presentations before we said we need to
invest In research, we need to invest in education as well as in outreach or
extension services so to educate people out there.
So having said that this establishes the ground for
the work and what needs to be done and that's when the idea means to end,
that's when and why ADM institution was established.
So, with all those ideas, in the back of our mind,
ADM Institute was established by the ADM company and, the purpose
was to make it as an international information and technology hub.
So we should have all the information out there.
We should encompass all the technologies, practices and systems out there,
either develop or help develop or disseminate the information to people.
We should also focus on, right now, staple crops because
most developing countries people don't have enough food to have.
This institute was announce from a 10 million dollar gift from
the ADM company in 2011.
And as we'll discuss with some of our new undertaking that we just started
this year in 2014.
So initially,
when this institute was established, we concentrated on four things.
One was transformational research and
development activities to reduce postharvest losses.
