Hello everyone. My name is Dr. Maurice Scott and I am a palliative care physician from the University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus. I'm Dr. Regina Fink an advanced practice nurse and Associate Professor at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. We welcome you to the second course in the palliative care specialization. This one is entitled easing pain and palliative care. Now, pain is a common symptom and one that can dramatically affect a person's quality of life and well-being. I bet that everyone watching this video has experienced pain at some point in time. You've also likely seen another person hurting due to unrelieved pain. In palliative care, our goal is to get pain better controlled. This can help ease suffering and make people feel better overall. This course consists of four modules and a final case study that brings it all together in a summative assessment. In the first module, you will learn about the different types of pain a person may experience, how the body recognizes pain, and how you can tell if someone's having pain, we call this pain assessment. The second module will offer integrative therapies to lessen pain,. In the third and fourth modules, you will gain tips on Non-Opioid and Opioid Medications that may be hopeful at relieving someone's pain. The information provided will not make you an expert on Pain Medication Management. Instead, your improved understanding of how these medications work will let you better communicate with licensed healthcare providers who can prescribe these drugs. This clear communication can help make it easier to get pain under control. Thanks for your interest in learning more about pain. We look forward to getting to know each and every one of you in the coming days and weeks. With that, let's get started. Let's ease some pain and suffering.
