The underlying theme of this module is that it is you who owns the responsibility for your own leadership development. If you rely on others, you're likely to be very disappointed. So in that regard, we'll use two leadership models that I will flip around and look at them from the perspective of the follower and the things that you can use to develop your own leadership plans. As we begin to set goals, let's begin by looking at one leadership model. And that is one proposed by Peter Koestenbaum in his book Leadership, The Inner Side of Greatness. He proposed a model that referred to the leadership diamond. My teaching partner here on campus, Tom Phalen, has adapted this to look at what you as an individual should be doing to grow your own leadership greatness. So let's begin with defining your personal reality. Here, have you done the things to establish the facts around your skills and abilities as a leader? We started early on in the specialization, doing self assessments and have continued that process throughout the learning in this specialization. You've done a number of self assessments to give you a picture of where you currently stand with regard to a variety of skills. Have you learned from your leadership experience and begun to apply those lessons? Have you gotten feedback from others to get good information about where you do well and where you need, perhaps, some improvement? And have you done the self reflection, as we've done throughout the specialization in the leadership journals, to internalize the lessons not only of the lecture, but from your personal experiences. Do you have a personal vision? Do you have some idea of what kind of leader you want to be and what your future self will look like?. What will you be in five to ten years, and do you have aspirations that go along with that? As you think about your personal ethics, what are your values, where do they come from? And what are your cultural norms that might influence your leadership style and your leadership development? How do you treat other people? That will be key to how you grow your leadership skills. As we move on to your personal courage, this really reflects the commitment that you're going to have to set meaningful goals, and to take action to accomplish those goals. In this module, we will be spending a lot of time talking about SMART goals. We'll define that acronym and go into great detail about the mechanics of how to set those goals. Ultimately, this is all about how you can grow to become better. How you can grow this circle to increase your personal greatness.
