You've created the user accounting PATRIC, and now you want to use the workspace and maybe store some data there. If I go up here to workspaces, it tells me that I need to be logged in to view my workspaces. That's another important thing to remember. You must be logged in, to use the services and to view your workspace on PATRIC. We can just click on this here and that opens up a pop up box. You could also get it from clicking the logon icon here, or here. You enter your username and your password and login. Notice that once you didn't do this page, we'll rewrite to show the data that's available. It'll show the jobs monitor, and more importantly, when you go up here and click on workspaces, it'll show you that there is data in the workspaces. Notice there's an upper level of workspaces and there's a home directory and public workspaces, and also my jobs and my private genomes. Within the home directory, we have three folders that we set up for you automatically. Genome groups, featured groups, experiment groups. But when I click on this, which takes me to my workspace, and yes I recognize it's a mess. Don't call on my example. Always put in folders. I've had it for a long time, so I wasn't as good about it at the beginning as I should've been. You notice I do have folders in here but they are not those folders you saw originally. When you click on these, you can see that I can have sub-folders within them and also other data that I so desire. Also notice that we have public workspaces. These are workspaces that are shared with you across PATRIC. These are shared with me. Yours is going to look a little bit different than mine will look. Now let's say that you're teaching class or you're running a lab, and you want to all share data together. To do that, you need to create a shared workspace. How do you do that? Well, we're going to need to go up into workspaces and click up here at the highest level workspaces. Now notice that these have a different icon. Let's go back to the public workspaces and see the little picture of the Earth. That means it's seen around the world. Everybody can view this workspace once they're logged into PATRIC. But here, under these workspaces at the highest level, you'd get a different view here. This is the sharing icon and this is the workspace icon. How do I create a new workspace that I want to share with my collaborators? Up here in the upper right, there's a Create Workspace icon. You need to click that. Then it allows me to create a workspace. Just so it's alphabetical and I can see it, I'm going to call it a workspace, and create it. You notice that there's a message here that says the workspace has been created. Then up here I can see it. This is the icon for workspace, this is a workspace, but I don't have the sharing icons. This is an indication that it's only shared with me. Look here I'm the owner, there's only me and this is the time it was created. So how do I share it? Well, I need to highlight the row, and then that populates this vertical green bar with possible downstream icons. I want to click the "Share" icon, so I click on that, and it tells me that I have some possibilities here. Now, this is an important note, even if I share this workspace with people, and I have my private genome data, I can share papers in the workspace, I can put slides in the workspace, I can put Excel sheets in the workspace, I can share public genome groups in this workspace, but the private data you're going to need to go in and individually share that data with them and I'll show you how to do that. Another thing you can do is make it publicly readable if you so desire so that anybody can read it. But let's say you want to share it with specific users. If you know their user ID, you would just type it in here, and there it its, so I have to click on it and then I can give him permission to view or edit it. Viewing means you can just look at it. Edit means you can have access to it as well. If it's somebody you really trust, you click "Edit". If it's a bunch of students in your class, I would recommend clicking "View Only". I can add that user, and notice that here they are, they have editing privileges, and I can also delete them at anytime it's my workspace, I control it and I have to say over who can view or edit. If I wanted to add somebody else, and let's say I couldn't remember their user ID, often you can write in their last name, and PATRIC is looking through all the users to try to figure out who that might be. When I see the person I want, if you're lucky enough to see them, because of the really common last name, he might be out of luck, I can click on that and then I can change the permissions or give them the same permissions. Add that user now it's not shared with them until I save it. Then once I do save it, it says my permissions have been updated and you see the sharing icon. In the next video, I'll be showing you how to share a private genome with these users, and then move it into this workspace so that they can see it. Thanks. Here's your second assignment. Now throughout this course you'll be creating a lot of folders in your private workspace. But because we get so many questions on how to do this, and I've just shown you how to do this. I want you to create a workspace that can be shared. Then if you know another PATRIC user, allow them to share that workspace with you. You don't have to share anything important in it. In fact, the next two assignments or just with test data, that I want you to get comfortable with that so that you can create a shared workspace and use it for collaboration.
