We are talking about anatomy of the nervous system. So why would we like to study the anatomy of nervous system? Before we get into our nervous system we need to know where every part is. So before we get into anatomy, first of all, let's look at the axes and planes of our body. So, we have three major planes and axes in our body. The first, coronal plane, here, this part, coronal plane. As we cut our body this way. And then the second plane, transverse plane, this plane here. And we cut our body (in) horizontal way. And then also, we have an axis, sagittal axis. And then we have coronal axis here. And then we have vertical axis here. So these terms we will use a lot later on in our anatomy. And there is also lots of terminology in our anatomy. Let's first look at superior and inferior. Superior is the top part of our body and the inferior is where our feet is. Interior and posterior. Interior is the front part of our body and posterior is the back part of our body. If we only look at anterior and posterior, it's hard to understand because we're upright. If we just imagine ourselves as a crocodile and then you go like that way, so your front part is the anterior and your tail part is the posterior. And also we have this pair, ventral and dorsal. Ventral is basically this part, and then the back part is dorsal. And the medial and lateral. Medial is near to our midline, is what we call medial. And lateral is what we call apart from our midline. Interior, exterior. Interior is what is inside, exterior is what's outside. Superficial and deep. This pair we don't use that much as to the other pair. Superficial refers to the body's surface, and deep refers to the deep inside of our body. There's some websites, I found they are very helpful for us to study neuroanatomy. One is the website provided by Utah Medical School, Utah University. And the advantage of this website is it shows it from different planes and different axes to show the anatomy. And it's very interactive. And t hen the other website provided
by Harvard Medical School, and the good thing for this website is it collects many medical images along with the anatomy drafts. Such as vascular disease, brain tumors, and neurodegenerative disease, and infectious disease in the CNS system. So we can compare the wild type or the normal situation with the disease situation in this website.
