From the lesson

Monopoly Continued

Monopolies come in various types: one price monopoly, natural monopoly, price discrimination and monopolistic competition. This week we will expand the basic monopoly model to cover these cases and then explore market outcomes in each case. We will also discuss how government may intervene in such cases to benefit society as a whole and increase the surplus generated by the market.

Let's take another moment thinking through the graph of a natural monopoly with

a average total cost curve that's falling.

If the average total cost curve is falling,

that means the marginal cost curve has to always be below it.

Here's one example that is consistent with that where we have a constant and

small marginal cost.

And just remember that if the marginal cost is always constant,

it has to equal the average variable cost.

If every additional unit costs, for example, $5,

the average cost of the variable inputs will be $5.

So, again, we have a marginal cost that's equal to the average variable cost, and

we have an average total cost curve that's always falling.

That's the typical graph of the natural monopoly.
