About the Course

We make economics decisions every day: what to buy, whether to work or play, what to study. We respond to markets all the time: prices influence our decisions, markets signal where to put effort, they direct firms to produce certain goods over others. Economics is all around us. This course is an introduction to the microeconomic theory of markets: why we have them, how they work, what they accomplish. We will start with the concept of scarcity and how specialization according to comparative advantage helps us achieve more than we could alone. Next we model a marked using the tools of Supply and Demand and learn what well working markets accomplish and what their limit are. We end by exploring the impact of government intervention on perfect markets. Examples are taken from everyday life, from goods and services that we all purchase and use. We will apply the theory to current events and policy debates through weekly exercises. These will empower you to be an educated, critical thinker who can understand, analyze and evaluate market outcomes....

Microeconomics: The Power of Markets was an enlightening and thought-provoking journey into the fundamental principles that govern individual economic decisions and market dynamics. I enrolled in this course with a basic understanding of economics, but I can confidently say that it expanded my knowledge in ways I didn't anticipate.

Course Content (5/5): The course content was exceptionally well-structured, covering a wide range of microeconomic concepts. It started with the basics, gradually delving into more complex topics. The use of real-world examples and case studies made abstract economic theories come to life, making it easier to grasp the concepts. The inclusion of current events and their economic implications was a particularly engaging aspect of the course.

Instructor (5/5): The instructor, [Instructor's Name], was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the course. Their passion for microeconomics was evident in every lecture. They had a talent for explaining intricate concepts in a clear and relatable manner. Additionally, they were always available for questions and fostered a positive and interactive online learning environment.

Assignments and Assessments (4/5): The assignments and assessments were challenging yet fair. They encouraged critical thinking and application of the concepts learned in class. However, I would have appreciated a bit more variety in the types of assignments, such as group projects or discussions, to enhance the learning experience.

Resources (4/5): The course materials, including the textbook and supplementary readings, were well-selected and comprehensive. The online platform used for the course was user-friendly and organized. However, additional resources such as video tutorials or interactive simulations could have been beneficial to reinforce certain concepts.

Practical Application (5/5): One of the strongest aspects of this course was its emphasis on real-world applications. Understanding how microeconomics influences everyday decision-making, from individual choices to government policies, was eye-opening. It made me more aware of the economic forces at play in the world around me.

Overall Experience (4.5/5): Microeconomics: The Power of Markets was an intellectually stimulating course that left a lasting impression on me. It provided a solid foundation in microeconomic principles and their practical significance. While the course was excellent overall, a bit more variety in assignment types and additional supplementary resources would have made it even better.

In conclusion, I highly recommend Microeconomics: The Power of Markets to anyone interested in gaining a deeper understanding of economics and its impact on our lives. It's a rewarding course that equips students with valuable knowledge and analytical skills, and it's taught by an outstanding instructor who truly cares about their students' learning experience.

The professor clearly loves teaching the subject which always leads to better teaching. The way she broke down the content of the course in smaller chunks with more frequent and shorter quizes gives the course more of a microlearning feel, rather than having fewer, but longer quizes covering larger chunks of content. I felt that I really learned the material during the course because it is in fact geared to someone that has never taken an Economy class. In the end, there is a longer final exam that covers all the course content but I felt prepared for it which felt really great. In the end, I think the professor really took her time to think of the gradual content storyline in each lesson and also explains the content in a very friendly manner... this is what makes this course so spot on. I don't think many other professors take the time and care to make such great content.

Economics is all around us. We make economics decisions every day: what to buy, whether to work or play, what to study. We respond to markets all the time: prices influence our decisions, markets signal where to put effort, they direct firms to produce certain goods over others. This course is an introduction to the microeconomic theory of markets: why we have them, how they work, what they accomplish. This is an excellent intro to microeconomics under the standard model, taught by an excellent prof. Rebecca Stein. Her lecturing style is such that I hung onto every word she says. She distils the essence of this very fundamental concept and presents it with simplicity and clarity in a unique manner that somehow sticks in my head.

It's an excellent course. It started with the concept of scarcity, then introduced the idea of opportunity cost and the core idea of economics that every action has an opportunity cost, and you don't get anything for free. I also like the definition of economics she gave: Economics is the study of the allocation of scarce resources to satisfy unlimited wants. It explains everything clearly and might be much easier to grasp the main idea of microeconomics than read a textbook alone. Use some great examples and nice graphs to help you understand the material, and the questions are also relevant and worthwhile to solve, not too easy or too hard for beginners. Thank you, Ph.D. Rebecca Stein.

Dr. Stein is a terrific lecturer who has significantly increased my interest in economics - high as it already was. I'll be signing up for the "Market failures" course... as soon as my head stops aching from the highly beneficial, if somewhat painful reshaping of my outlook on the world that this bit of education resulted in. Also, much thanks to Rick Nimo - the mentor for the course - for his invaluable assistance.

Ouch. And kudos to both on a job brilliantly done, from another professional educator. :)

I learned a lot about fundamentals of microeconomics from this course. I will view the finance news with a fresh and deeper perspective from now on. I find the instructor Rebecca very effective in introducing abstract concepts through examples, walking through examples slowly and carefully, and making remarks and conclusions along the way. Some of her comments on the real-world economy is also really thought-provoking. I look forward to the next course to learn about when and how market fails.

Great introductory course. I think the professor assumes we're all good at mathematics and there were moments she did not explain the steps in some calculations. Regardless, the concepts were very well explained. I'm taking this course as a preparation for public policy program, and it is really really useful!
